Understanding the
Doctrine of Christ.
What Is the Doctrine of Christ?
The doctrine of Christ is the set of teachings and instructions that allows a person to overcome sin and death, and then to progress further to become exactly as Jesus Christ is, leading us to become as our Heavenly Father and Mother. This process is also referred to as “coming unto Christ,” “receiving Christ,” or “receiving his gospel.”
It consists of several key aspects:
- Entering into the covenant of offering up the sacrifice of a broken heart and contrite spirit. This specific covenant is referred to as the New Covenant or the New and Everlasting Covenant. This process includes exercising faith unto repentance, turning and yielding one’s heart to God.
- Receiving baptism by water by the authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood (to enter the terrestrial order of the gospel - the Church of Christ).
- Receive the baptism of fire/baptism of the Holy Ghost - this completes the baptism and is the moment Christ adopts one as his son/daughter, which allows the man/woman to actually take Christ’s name upon them. This is receiving one’s calling and election or becoming elect, chosen, redeemed, or saved.
- Continue in faith following the Spirit until entering into the rest of the Lord. This is the notion of “enduring to the end.” This experience of entering into the Lord’s rest is the Second Comforter and the promise of eternal life (2 Ne. 31:19-20; 32:6; D&C 88:1-5). This is the moment when a man or woman is sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise and has his/her calling and election made sure (2 Pet. 1:10-11). These people are those spoken of being just and true. This brings the person into the celestial order of the gospel - which is the Church of the Firstborn (D&C 76:53-54; 88:5).
